Game of the Year 4 and 3

That’s right kid-o’s. You’re going to have to suffer and wait until after the weekend for the big unveil. However, to tide you over, are the very meaty helpings of games 4 and 3.

4. Resident Evil 5- Essentially updating the graphics on Resident Evil 4 and bringing the game franchise back closer to the original Umbrella story, Resident Evil 5 was well worth the four year wait. Focusing heavily on action and co-op, horror took a back seat to this propelling experience. The producer of RE5 said this will be the last Resident Evil game of this style. Resident Evil 6 will change things again, but until that happens (probably four or five years from now) we’ll have to love Resident Evil 5 and try not to think about the Wii games.

“Resident Evil is held so unbelievably high for me that its a damn shame I couldn’t just make Resident Evil 5 #1, but it wasn’t without its problems. This is feeling less and less like a haunted house with T-Virus infected ghouls and more like a Bruce Cambell movie. The character models were exagerated, the enemies not scary, and the few spook moments were stolen from the Resident Evil greatest hits. However, bringing Chris, Jill, and Wesker back was cause for immediate forgiveness. This game had great maps, guns, and graphics. After the destruction of Wesker again, I wonder who the next villain will be. Ada? Nicholai? Steve? It will be interesting to say the least.” -Dan

3. Borderlands- Many wrote this title off as a poor man’s Fallout 3, but besides the endless desert wasteland, the two titles shouldn’t be compared. Borderlands creates a fun, comical, world in which you and three friends can hook up and play a seemless co-op. There’s not really a story. There’s nothing attaching you to your characters. But hell, this game makes it fun to shoot guns and scream obscenities are your asshole friend that drove off with your ride.

“Borderlands was a late pickup for me. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for another “fallout” type game right after playing Fallout 3 but it turned out to be a nice surprise.  The real fun lies in the online aspect of the game.  The online multiplayer just works amazingly and it is so easy to quickly hop into a game with friends.  This really became apparent when I was playing a single player game and when a friend got online and asked if I wanted to play some co-op.  Instead of me having to save my game and load a new one, I could just invite him right into my game.  I know this is nothing new but it is for a game of this size.  The game plays like Modern Warfare 2 with Diablo 2 dungeon crawling and looting.  The fighting is a lot more involved then Fallout 3 and the color pallet is not just grey and brown. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not better then Fallout 3, but don’t go thinking it is the same game.  The only thing I could say I am missing is the story… there isn’t much of one.  You get a little here and there but most of it is told though text you get when accepting a mission or completing a mission.  It would have been nice to get some actual voice dialog from the characters and maybe a cut scene here and there, and yes, I know it was probably best to leave it out to save on loading times for online play, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t leave it in the single player campaign.  Bottom line, if you’re looking for a fun RPG with good depth that you can play online with friends, this is your best option.” -Andy

  1. Only if RE had come out later in the year. It was one of those games that came out early this year that I played the CRAP out of. When I was reviewing my games, it was one of those that I seemed to overlook. I believe that both of these are in their correct spots!

Now, FEAR 2 should be removed. Just throwing that out there :D

  2. I really like Borderlands but its still hard for me to see it this high. The co-op is amazing but the lack of story kind of kills some of it for me… its a large RPG and one of the most important parts of an RPG (if not the most important part) is the story. Its fun as hell to play online but I find myself board after a little while when trying to play single player. It turns into go here, kill that guy, turn in quest, repeat… why? IDK, because that is how you play the game, not because the story tells you that you are doing something to save someone or progress the “plot”.

RE5… I still need to play that :/

  3. Ando, you should get it. I would play through with you. I’ve actually been looking for someone to play through again.

  4. sure, as soon as I beat ME2, AC2, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, Forza 2, Bioshock 2… you get the picture

  5. Remember those cold, confusing days after RE5 came out? The game seemed distant, withdrawn, morosely serious in place of the series’ usual syrupy schlock. Then there was the lumbering boss design, the hints of racism. As the months passed with more play-throughs, Resident Evil 5 revealed itself as a misunderstood classic. It’s one of those games that could legitimately be called a “grower,” striking in strange places beneath the skin and leaving lasting bruises. Keep your eye on Jun Takeuchi. With RE5, he has proved himself Capcom’s most vital talent of the generation.

  6. Capcom has been able to put out some of the best games on the market, but they don’t have that rockstar like Kojima or Cliffy B yet. I’d love to see Capcom’s rockstar come from the Resident Evil franchise.

I agree, RE5 is going to be a game people will hold future Resident Evils up to. You hear less and less about Resident Evil 2 nowadays and more about the past two.

  7. Word. Oddly, Inafune is still the public face for Capcom. Even back when Shinji Mikami was rocking Resident Evil and shepherding both Suda and the Clover talent, the damn Megaman guy was probably still the star.

  8. I think Borderlands had a great story and the ending of the game had a great build up… until they completely ruined the ending. That was my only problem.
